Understanding salt content on a nutrition label

We consume too much salt in Ireland. Adults only need 4 grams of salt each day yet most people are consuming double this! Too much salt in your diet can increase your blood pressure which increases your risk of a heart attack or stroke.

Most of the salt we eat comes from processed foods, fast food, canteen and restaurant food. About 20% is added at home in cooking or at the table and 15% occurs naturally in food.

A quick guide to determine if products are high or low in salt is to check the nutrition label on the product and see how many grams of salt the product contains per 100 grams. Please see the traffic light image (click to enlarge). Remember that the amount you eat of a particular food affects how much salt you will get from it!
