Mental health is about the way you think and feel and your ability to deal with ups and downs. It can change as circumstances change and as you move through different stages of your life.
Here are 4 practical tips to look after your mental health:
1. Keep in Touch: Family and friends can help you deal with the stressors of life. They can make you feel included and cared for and can offer different views on whatever is going on. Keep the lines of communication open!
2. Keep Active: Every minute of movement counts towards mental and physical health benefits! Practical methods to increase your physical activity include walking (and using the stairs), gardening, housework and performing "mobility snacks" throughout the day. Increasing your daily physical activity levels can help to improve your mood, self-esteem, stress relief, concentration and productivity as well as regulate your blood sugar, cholesterol levels and blood pressure and relieve pain and stiffness.
3. Eat Well: What we eat can affect how we feel. We recommend that you enjoy frequent, balanced meals and snacks throughout the day and aim to stay hydrated (approximately 1.5 - 2 litres of fluid per day)!
4. Take A Break: A change of scene or pace is good for your mental health. This could be a 5 minute pause from performing housework, a 30 minute lunch break at work or getting out and about at the weekend. Give yourself some "me time" and make sure to listen to your body. Sleep is so important for your mental health!
